They deal in minutes, we deal in miles

My cousins are in town and they don't get the distance thing in Miami. They drove down from Ft. Lauderdale for Easter, there were 25 of us, it was wild. Really fun. Tonight a bunch of us are going up to Ft. Lauderdale.

But back to the miles thing: For instance, when I say, we are going 30 miles from here to there, they think, omg, no. They don't get that 30 miles here, is not like 30 miles in New York. 30 miles here is going from neighborhood to neighborhood, in New York 30 miles is going from state to state. It's going from NYC up into the mountains or New England.

I live about four miles, maybe three, from the peforming arts center downtown Miami. If I get in my car, I am there in less than 10 minues. In New York, my cousins live about three to four miles from Broadway. If they want to go to a play, it takes them half an hour or more to get that same three miles.

They talk in minutes, not miles. When my cousin asks, how far is that from here. I say, five miles. She always says, "No, what is that in minutes?"

30 miles here is a half hour trip, maybe 45 minutes. 30 miles in New York is a half day trip.
